Year 5 have been working hard on their knowledge of continents, oceans and countries in Geography. They have used a variety of media and methods to understand and learn the knowledge they need, and have had a lot of fun in the process. Our Chromebooks have opened up a huge resource base for us in this regard, as the children are able to access short, low-stakes quizzes which help them to retrieve information again and again, thus securing it into their long term memory. If you are interested in how we forget and how we learn, you might find it interesting to find out about the work of Robert Bjork: https://bjorklab.psych.ucla.edu/research/#spacing
The Curriculum Development Target working party staff members are currently using this research as a basis for redesigning our curriculum for maximum impact on our childrens’ learning. We recently had a very informative and thought-provoking staff meeting which prompted some lively professional discussion - something we have missed whilst trying to work on screens!
The result of retrieving information again and again is having a good impact in Year 5 Geography. A huge well done to SMc who managed to label all 47 countries of Europe on a blank map!
