It would be a mistake to think of the outdoor space as a place to take a break from learning. We do not let children outside just to let off steam, then bring the back inside for real learning. Rather, learning is done as much (some would say more ) outside as it is inside.
From abseiling down a viaduct to orienteering to weaselling and bouldering, Year 3 and 4 did it all at this year's residential trip to Lockerbook.
Year 3 and 4 were mixed and split into 4 groups engaging in a variety of fantastic outdoor experiences that the Lockerbrook experts provide. We had some wobbly knees from the children (and Mr Sanders!) when preparing to abseil down the 25m viaduct but with a few nurturing words, every single child did it! This was a great achievement for all Year 3 and 4 and will be an accomplishment that will last a life time!
Not only that! We managed to start a real fire with nothing more than cotton wool, flint and steel. Some children had to try, try and try again (but their perseverance paid off) and we had some experts that managed to start it first time! Then we got to make yummy hot chocolate heated from the fire.
Overall, we had a wonderful time at our residential this year and we made memories with our friends and teachers that we will never forget.
Here are some quotes from Year 3 and 4:
E.S: I enjoyed abseiling off the bridge and I liked doing the crate stacking when it wobbled and jumping for Geoffrey the monkey! I loved food it was yummy and I loved sleeping with my friends.
G.M.M. I went abseiling I was excited but also scared and I went crate stacking and it was fun.
L.J. Abseiling was really fun and when the bridge goes you think it’s going to be really hard but it’s actually really easy.
T.D. I enjoyed doing crate stacking and climbing off the bridge was fun. My friends kept talking on the first night.
L.R. I really enjoyed the abseiling and it was really fun but at the same time a bit scary.
