Part of the English curriculum in Year 1 expects the children to be confident in both reading and writing the alphabet. Learning to write the alphabet independently and in order is quite a challenge.
The children also learn how to form each letter cursively. Once they have achieved success in writing the lower case alphabet independently, the children learn to write the upper case.
It is really important that they know the letter name as well as the letter sound as it makes a huge difference to spellings and phonics; this is why the children practice it daily.
