At Brabyns we are proud to offer a wide breadth of sporting opportunities for children of all ages. So far in January well over half of the Juniors have represented the school in fixtures, which have included, football, golf, gymnastics, high-5, cross country, swimming and basketball. Representing the school is always something special for a child, and our aim is for as many children as possible from Year 1-6 to have this opportunity during the course of the school year. We consider that being able to give so many children the opportunity to represent the school in a wide variety of activities is one of our great strengths at Brabyns, and we are aware that this is something that bigger schools especially are simply not able to achieve.
It has been exciting to add gymnastics and golf to our fixtures this term. The gymnastics competition saw the children perform routines (on the floor and using the spring-board over the vault) at Stockport Gymnastics Club and was a wonderful chance for our team to show their flexibility and creativity. It was also great to focus on a ‘non-ball sport’, giving children with different strengths the chance to represent the school at a discipline in which they excel. The golf tournament was held at Marple Hall High School, and we took 30 children with us to enjoy some of the finer points of the game - in which some really excelled! The gymnastics and golf events are run by Stockport SHAPES (Schools Health, Activity, Physical Education & Sport) Alliance who provide a year round, wide range of opportunities for all children in the Stockport area. The focus at all of these events is on participation as well as competition. At the end of each event, a few children are selected for a special spirit award, which is always a very difficult decision when many of our children often display such a great attitude.
You may recall that last year we were ‘double award’ winners from SHAPES, for both our contribution to the sporting fixtures and our overall PE provision. A great achievement. It was also delightful this week to have a member of staff from another school come over to especially to tell us what a lovely school we were. She remarked that her children had told her that our (basketball) team were such good sports, and so great to play against (and it wasn’t because they beat us! We won the game).
PE really does thrive at Brabyns in so many ways, and the extra-curricular opportunities help the children to develop their interests and also find a sport that may be their niche.
