At Brabyns we have set up a Science and Engineering Club for the Gifted and Talented. The children in the club are going to enter the National Engineering Leaders Award Competition 2019/20. As part of the competition the children have to answer the question ‘If you were an Engineer- what would you do…?’ As part of their research the children are expected to interview an Engineer and find out more information.
After compiling a number of interesting questions the club visited Driv International (Ferodo) in Chapel en le Frith. Driv is a global company which sells different car parts across the world. At Chapel they produce brake pads for different types of cars. During our visit the children were amazed at the size of the factory. They were also fascinated by the robots used in the process. In particular, as part of the tour, they were the first school to program the robots to work in a certain manner. The children also interviewed the engineers about the robots and their role in the process of making brake pads.
Since their visit the club has met regularly to investigate the role of robots. To start with they have made lego models and used the lego company software to program the models to move. Next they have been thinking of their own ideas for the use of robotics in day to day life. For the competition they need to write a letter including a diagram of their innovative idea to answer the above question. So far the children (one from each Year group) have been engaged in the process and are looking forward to designing their final product for the competition deadline on 27th March 2020.
