In all our Reception mathematics sessions, there is a big emphasis on understanding number. The children write the numbers to twenty on whiteboards everyday to ensure that they can form them correctly and know them in sequence. Number cards are put up high around the room and the children are active as they count each day, jumping and shouting.
They will count forwards and backwards from any number and recognise numbers out of sequence. This helps to form the foundations of their understanding for reaching the Early Learning Goal in this area.
This week, the children have also been matching Numicon pieces into the silhouettes of towers and then counting and labelling these for numbers beyond 10. Counting objects with one to one correspondence and matching numerals to this counting, are activities often found in the Reception classroom and form essential building blocks for children’s understanding of number.
