Year 5 were delighted to welcome Jenny on Monday, to learn about Fairtrade, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight. Jenny has a great job, buying chocolate for the Coop!
It was so interesting to learn about how the Fairtrade Foundation helps farmers in developing countries to earn a fair price for their products. The children asked some superb and insightful questions and learned that the farmers earn enough money to reinvest in their own communities. We also discovered the process that is used to get from ‘bean to bar.’ Did you know that the beans are actually white to start with and that they have to ‘sunbathe?’
Some children even went to the supermarket that evening and helped their parents choose Fairtrade products by looking out for the symbol. They are going to recreate the symbol in their own way and we will use these as a new display in our classroom.
