In Nursery we have created an interactive display encouraging the children to reflect on how they feel and know what to do when they feel certain emotions. This helps the children to think about their actions, develop their problem-solving abilities and be in the ‘ready to learn’ state of mind.
The display is influenced by the ‘Zones of Regulation’ approach, something we adopt through Brabyns, which is designed to help the children recognise when they are in different states, called ‘zones,’ which each of the four zones are represented by a different colour - green ‘ready to learn,’ blue ‘rest,’ yellow ‘slow down’ and red ‘time to stop’. In Nursery, we are focusing on teaching the children that their emotions can alter throughout the day. We encourage them to regularly reflect on how they feel and place their name next to the relevant feeling. For example if they feel that they are in the ‘red zone’, they are encouraged to stop and review their feelings, explaining why they feel that way, in order to find a solution and move up the zones.
