In Nursery at Brabyns, we have enhanced the way we teach Phonics to the children. They are now exposed to the sounds through discrete, active, fun and interactive games, such as letter and word hunts within the environment. During our ‘Squiggle Whilst We Wiggle’ sessions, we dance out the formation of the letters with flipper flappers (pieces of materials) in our hands.
Building on these foundations, we also lead a short story time session every day. We have been using the ‘Tales Toolkit’ initiative, based on developing the children’s awareness of the characters, settings, problems and solutions in the stories. This, in turn, will help to develop the children’s communication and language skills, increase engagement, creativity, confidence, writing, problem solving and even memory capacity.
