We are so fortunate to have the new Chromebooks at Brabyns, and we have jumped in head first exploring all the possibilities they have brought to enhance the children’s learning. Of course it’s a huge learning curve for the staff, especially those of us at the greyer end of the spectrum, but thankfully the children are helping us! We are all one learning community, and that has really come to the fore this term.
The opportunities that the new technology has brought are far-reaching - perhaps even impossible to imagine, but we have already used it in so many different ways. Never have a Year 5 class been so engaged in practising their times tables as they are now that they can log on to Times Tables Rockstars and battle one another for Rock Hero status! Last week the children were exploring ‘highest common factors’ and ‘lowest common multiples’ in Maths. All the children were able to practise and consolidate their understanding by accessing games at their own challenge level. Children who are less confident to speak up in class discussions can use the ‘Stream’ in Google Classroom to put their views and points across, and we as teachers can set quizzes, and give feedback online.
It really is a very exciting time to be a teacher and a child, and we can’t wait to see what other possibilities we can explore!
