Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and to relate to others.
This is why we place a lot of emphasis in the Early Years on promoting child-initiated play through Continuous Provision Time, which allows the children to choose where they want to learn, either in the indoor or outdoor classroom environments. It helps support the children in developing their own ideas and being in control of their learning.
The practitioners play an important role in child-initiated play by providing them with a safe environment to explore and test out their ideas. The adults also use the children’s interests and next steps to develop play through offering a breath of opportunities and resources for the children to use in a variety of ways.
The children’s child initiated work is accessible for you to view within the learning environment. Please refer to the Little Gems & Kindergarten individual ‘Child Initiated Work’ displays, as well as ‘We Love Outdoor Learning.’
