Year 5 have been using the ‘three things about’ planning tool to develop their descriptive writing skills. The tool encourages them to think about the detail in their work, focusing on senses. The format helps children to scaffold their writing, and can be extremely useful in the time-pressured context of entrance exams, where children are often required to produce a piece of writing in a short time-frame.
They used a photograph of a desert scene to fire their imagination and initiate discussion and ‘senses mapping’. Following this they made notes on their ‘three things about’ template, and then used this as a basis for their interesting sentences, which were crafted together to form paragraphs.
The next stage will be to develop a character for a piece of writing set in their desert scene, and this will be followed by the study of a complex comprehension text set in the desert.
