Residential Trips: An Opportunity for Personal Development

The summer term is always action packed and full of exciting school activities to go alongside the normal daily lessons. It is a great example of how we educate the ‘whole’ child here at Brabyns.

The Residentials do really embellish the curriculum and children’s personal development, and it is always a pleasure to witness first-hand the children’s enjoyment and accomplishments during their time away from School.

Year 1 and 2 have their Activity Day and Sleepover in School, Year 3 and 4 stayed at Lockerbrook Farm for three days, and this year, Year 5 and 6 were based in Llandudno, enjoying a variety of activities and trips. For many (whatever age) it is first time that they spend that length of time away from home and it is a worthwhile aspect of the children’s overall development. I also like the fact the children have no access to their electronic devices for residential trips, something I think us as adults could often do with as well!

Photographs from each residential can be found in the photo galleries section of the website: see below for direct links. They highlight the range of activities the children have the opportunity to enjoy, providing a variety of learning experiences on so many levels. Every child comes away with having achieved so much, be it conquering a fear or challenging themselves physically or emotionally. This demonstrates that achievements are developed in all aspects of School life and the more ‘formal’ lessons are just part of a child’s rounded education. I am a strong advocate of outdoor learning and residential trips are key opportunities for the children to develop resilience, seek and overcome challenges, maintain positivity and develop their teamwork skills.

One of the great benefits of these trips is the quality of the relationships that develop between the children and with their teachers. Many of you know that these trips are certainly one of the highlights of my year - seeing different children shine in different contexts and children seeing their teachers away from the classroom and interacting with them in different ways. Although residentials are demanding for staff (particularly being on watch 24-7) they are enjoyable for us too!

This year’s trips were - as always - fun, action-packed and exhausting (for all!). A massive thank you to the staff who give up their own time and who work hard behind the scenes to create these amazing opportunities for the children - opportunities that live long in the memory and are often the highlight of a child’s school career.
