At Brabyns we provide lots of exciting Art based activities for all the children. The children enjoy exploring a whole range of different media and learning a variety of different skills and techniques. We decided to kick-start the Art curriculum this academic year with a Whole School Art Day and we invited the local artist Sarah Hicks into School to work with all the children from Nursery to Year 6 to create some exciting artwork.
We decided on the theme of ‘messages’ as this links to the theme for our Poetry Day later on in the term, with the aim to create and then install some big art that can go up in the School grounds which all of the children could contribute to. All of the children were involved in covering branches with glue and glitter to create a sparkly tree in which to hang our artwork. Mr Hough (the cleaner) has almost forgiven us for the trail of glitter up the stairs! Each class had a go at making something to hang on the tree. The children in the EYFS and Infants had a go at decorating bark disks while the older children made pictures from acetate and sticky back plastic. Look out for it; it will be installed very soon!
Some of the children also made their own ‘message in a bottle’ by decorating plastic bottles and writing a message to someone they know to go inside. The children also helped to create two giant totem poles, which you might have seen in the doorway to the Junior building. The EYFS coloured in the backgrounds, Year 3 and 4 did lots of sticking of brightly coloured squares and Year 5 and 6 drew pictures of ‘Emoji’ faces to go on it! It looks wonderful.
